The Constitutional Convention and The Miracle of Democracy:” A Constitution Day Lecture by Richard Dreyfuss

Dreyfuss will describe the debates and explain the compromises involved in crafting the U.S. Constitution at the Philadelphia Convention of 1787. He will emphasize the importance of the Constitution for American democracy today. A discussion and reception will follow. The program is free and open to the public.

Constitution Day Speaker Will Addresss Citizens United Decision

“Democracy at Risk” is the title of the Constitution Day lecture to be presented by former Congressman Bob Edgar on Wednesday, September 14, at 7 pm at the Robert C. Byrd Center for Legislative Studies. Edgar will address the challenges posed to the political process by the Supreme Court’s 2010 decision on the case of Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission.

Award-Winning Film Challenges Viewers to Decide Fate of Guantanamo Detainee

Writer and producer Sig Libowitz will join a panel discussion of his film The Response, at 7 pm, Wednesday, November 17 in the auditorium of the Robert C. Byrd Center for Legislative Studies. The thirty-minute film places the audience at the center of a courtroom drama based on declassified transcripts of the Combatant Status Review Tribunals (CSRTs) held at Guantanamo Bay detention camp in Cuba.
