The Legacy Project

The Robert C. Byrd Center for Legislative Studies announces a major project to gather stories, photos, and other items that relate to the life and career of the late Senator Robert C. Byrd, the longest serving Senator in American history and West Virginia’s “Man of the Century.”

The Byrd Center, on the campus of Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, WV is the official repository and archive of Senator Byrd’s private and public papers. The Center seeks to add to the holdings of its extensive collection with a three-part program to:

  1. Conduct oral history interviews with persons who knew Senator Byrd well;
  2. Create a traveling exhibit that will tell the story of Senator Byrd’s distinguished career and his service to West Virginia and the Nation: and
  3. Encourage the people of West Virginia and elsewhere to send stories to the Byrd Center of their experiences with Senator Byrd. In addition to stories about Senator Byrd, we encourage West Virginians to send us copies of photographs they may have that show Senator Byrd.
