Sending Stories
Send us your stories and recollections of Senator Byrd. You can do this two ways. Write or type the stories and send them to us by regular mail to: Robert C. Byrd Center for Legislative Studies, P.O. Box 5000, Shepherd University, Shepherdstown, WV 25443.
Or, send your stories by email to ByrdLegacy@shepherd.edu. Your stories may be just a paragraph or two or as long as you care to make them. Tell us how Senator Byrd affected your life, or how he interacted with you or others you know. Perhaps he spoke at your school or church, or visited your home. Maybe you only knew him by watching C-SPAN or by following his career, yet you were impacted in some way by his words or actions. Your stories will become a permanent part of the Robert C. Byrd Archive. All stories must be signed by the author and provide a name and address so we may contact you if needed. The stories will be available for researchers and members of the public to view at the Byrd Center. With your permission, some of the stories may be featured on this website and used for exhibit purposes.
Sending Photos
We welcome photos you have that feature Senator Byrd. All photos must clearly identify the people in the picture and, whenever possible, provide the date and place the photo was taken. All photos you send will become the property of the Robert C. Byrd Center for Legislative Studies, where they will become a permanent part of the Robert C. Byrd Archive. The photos will be available for researchers and members of the public to view at the Byrd Center. With your permission, some of the stories may be featured on this website and used for exhibit purposes. We will accept copies of photos, so you can keep the original and we will accept digital copies, which can be emailed to ByrdLegacy@shepherd.edu.
Sending Letters
If you received letters from Senator Byrd, we welcome copies. You can send copies to the Byrd Center by regular mail or by email. You can retain the original and send us a copy or you are welcome to send us the original letter. If you have extensive correspondence with Senator Byrd that you would like to donate to the Byrd Center, please call the Byrd Center at 304-876-5702 and we will make arrangements for pick-up or shipping.
What NOT to Send
Please do not send any printed matter related to Senator Byrd, such as newspaper clippings, copies of speeches, copies of the Congressional Record, or copies of Senator Byrd’s long-running newsletter, the Byrd’s Eye View. The Byrd Center has a complete run of the newsletter, which will be posted on this website. We also have extensive files of newspaper clippings covering Senator Byrd’s entire career.
