Jay was appointed Director of the Byrd Center in 2018 after serving as Director of Programs and Research for five years. He leads the Center’s community outreach and programming initiatives at the local, state, and national levels, develops and oversees its research projects, and coordinates its oral history program. Under Jay’s leadership, the Byrd Center continues to be a respected hub for bi-partisan programs and research that engages and informs audiences about the U.S. Congress, the Constitution, and American representative democracy in both historical and contemporary contexts.
Jay is the current president of the Association of Centers for the Study of Congress, a national alliance of organizations and institutions that promote the study of the United States Congress. He also teaches courses on American History and public history for Shepherd University's History Department.
Jay is curator of the retrospective traveling exhibit, Robert C. Byrd: Senator, Statesman, West Virginian and co-curator of the collaborative digital exhibit, The Great Society Congress, an ACSC project. He is the coauthor with Katherine Scott of “Robert C. Byrd: Technician and Tactician,” in the forthcoming edited volume Leadership in the U.S. Senate: Herding Cats in the Modern Era. Jay contributed several essays for the online Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia and is currently writing an essay on Senator Byrd’s three terms in the House of Representatives during the 1950s.

Jody began working at the Byrd Center in October 2011 as a student intern and joined the staff in June 2013. Managing the preservation of the Byrd Center's congressional collections, Jody facilitates access to our archival resources by working with researchers and assisting in the development of educational and outreach tools. Jody is active in the Society of American Archivists where he serves on the steering committee for the Congressional Papers Section. He is also a member of the Association of Centers for the Study of Congress. Jody received a BA in Public History from Shepherd University in 2013 and a MARA from San Jose State University in 2017.
