The Robert C. Byrd Center is pleased to be a participant in Shepherd University’s Day of Giving—an important one-day campaign for donations. Please help us make this day a success for the University and for the mission of the Byrd Center to advance representative democracy by promoting a better understanding of the United States Congress and the Constitution through programs and research that engage citizens. Your donations are an investment in the programs of the Center, the maintenance of its important archival collections, and to support Shepherd student interns, who gain valuable first-hand experience working in a major congressional archive. Byrd CHE received Congressionally Directed Spending Award
The Byrd CHE is thrilled to announce it received a Congressionally Directed Spending Award. We are profoundly grateful to Senators Shelley Moore Capito and Joe Manchin for their support of our project. This special funding allows the advancement of the critical missions of the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education. The award of $250,000 from the National Archives and Records Administration will support the digitization of paper and photographic records. The proposal was created by Director Emeritus and Resident Scholar Dr. Ray Smock; Project Director Dr. Jim Broomall, Byrd Center Director.

Conducting Research at the Byrd Center

The Byrd Center houses the personal papers of five members of the United States Congress from West Virginia in its extensive archives. These collections offer rich resources for exploring national and international events of the Cold War era through the turn of the twenty-first century as well as preserving the voices of millions of Appalachians through their correspondence with their elected representatives.
