The Robert C. Byrd Legacy Project
The Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education has established the Legacy Project to gather stories, photos, and other items that relate to the life and career of the late Senator Robert C. Byrd, the longest serving Senator in American history and West Virginia’s “Man of the Twentieth Century.”
The Byrd Center, on the campus of Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, WV is the official repository and archive of Senator Byrd’s private and public papers. The Center seeks to add to the holdings of its extensive collection with a three-part program to:

Public Submissions
The Byrd Center welcomes public submissions to the Legacy Project. We especially encourage you to share your personal stories and recollections of the senator by email or by mail: Robert C. We welcome photos you have that feature Senator Byrd. All photos must clearly identify the people in the picture and, whenever possible, provide the date and place the photo was taken. All photos you send will become the property of the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education, where they will become a permanent part of the Robert C. Byrd Archive. The photos will be available for researchers and members of the public to view at the Byrd Center. With your permission, some of the stories may be featured on this website and used for exhibit purposes. We will accept copies of photos, so you can keep the original and we will accept digital copies.
If you received letters from Senator Byrd, we welcome copies. You can send copies to the Byrd Center by regular mail or by email. You can retain the original and send us a copy or you are welcome to send us the original letter. If you have extensive correspondence with Senator Byrd that you would like to donate to the Byrd Center, please call the Byrd Center at 304-876-5648 and we will make arrangements for pick-up or shipping.
What NOT to Send
Please do not send any printed matter related to Senator Byrd, such as newspaper clippings, copies of speeches, copies of the Congressional Record, or copies of Senator Byrd’s long-running newsletter, the Byrd’s Eye View. The Byrd Center has a complete run of the senator's newsletter. We also have extensive files of newspaper clippings covering Senator Byrd’s entire career.
