By Malorie Matos It was nearly one year ago that Byrd CLS Intern Malorie Matos began working on processing Senator Byrd’s Press collection. For months, Malorie and fellow intern Sarah Brennan sorted through almost 50 boxes containing thousands of press releases and related congressional documents. Malorie and Sarah arranged and re-housed everything, detailing the entire process in this Post from the Archives blog last October. We are pleased to announce that the collection is now fully processed and ready for researchers! Recently, Malorie finished entering the folder titles into our records management system. This aspect of the project consisted of using our Past Perfect software to catalog all of the folders we’ve been working with over the last year. After all of the files were entered in the system, Malorie created labels for all of the boxes and then generated a finding aid for the collection. The finding aid will assist any researchers looking for documents pertaining to a certain year or topic.
The Press Series occupies 116 linear feet and contains 238 boxes. The collection is divided into eight subseries: General Press, Appropriations, Bird’s Eye Views, Newsletters, Charleston Gazette & Daily Mail, Obituaries, Original Press Releases, and Photos. These subseries cover Senator Byrd’s career from 1951 until his death in 2010. This collection features news clippings, memos, press releases, staff files, and a wide variety of other documents that give great insight into the relationship between politicians and the press. Processing may have seemed like a long and tedious task, but it was really a great experience. Malorie has gone through nearly 60 years worth of congressional press files and found so many interesting bits of history every day. She is very happy to open this fascinating collection to the public! Comments are closed.
